Home Place - St. Gabriel, LA. This drawing shows the two story timber frame structure of the 1st period, possibly 1772-3. This is the earliest example two story timber frame I know of. The lower level begins with 12" x 12" sills. The wall posts are of two sizes; 10" x 10" and 8" x 8". All are fully mortised into the lower and upper sills, There are no floor joists or any evidence to suggest there ever were. There are two separate bousillage wall constructions, one facing the interior and one faces the exterior. (not shown) The upper framing is more typical of the timber framing we see in the 18th and early 19th century. The roof framing is not shown as it has been completely altered ca. 1820 when there was a major addition to the building. (not shown) |
