The history of an area is an integral part of understanding old buildings. No more so than Louisiana where, In the early 1700's, people came here mostly from France, some from Germany and other europeon communities. This is the "French Colonial" period. Beginning in 1763, Louisiana comes under the administration of the Spanish government. This is the Spanish Colonial period. Spain gives the land back to France and the Louisiana Purchase makes it American Territory. With few exceptions, the area below the Bayou Manchac and west of the Mississippi river was composed primarily of people who practiced Catholicism. Above the bayou Manchac, and east of the Mississippi, peole were generally "Anglos" who practised protestant religions. These distinctions, which are primarily cultural, accounts for the noticably diiferent type of buildings seen in the 18th and early 19th century in different regions in Louisiana. Louisiana becomes a state in 1813.
