LOUISIANA can be defined into at least two distinct Cultural regions. On the map above (soil types) the area to the bottom in green is called Lowlands - composed of alluvial soils and marshes. This is the area where the French speaking Catholic people settled. The area above is "high ground" composed of terraces and hills. These areas were settled by English speaking Protestant people (Anglos) people settled. These two cultures built distinctly different types of buildings. |
